Dexter, MI. Orchard and Vegetable Garden Before Video

Poseidon Ponds & Landscaping

Project Showcase:  Fox Project (Orchard and Vegetable Garden)

This summer we were contracted by the Fox's to build a beautiful orchard and vegetable garden.  Mrs. Fox had been compiling ideas for this project for many years and spent a great deal of time meeting with a landscape architect to design her well thought out vision.  The project would include dry stacked boulder walls, crushed gravel pathways with a timber border, raised and in ground garden beds, compost bins, a fire pit, storm water drainage, seasonal faucets and a playhouse for the grandchildren.

Work on this Dexter, MI. project began in early June and was completed in mid July.  From the very beginning we knew we were in a time crunch as there was a planned wedding for the Fox's daughter in August.  As landscapers we are used to unforeseen issues and this project was no special case.   We battled record rainfall with heavy clay soils, extreme heat with no shade (we later brought in tents for shade during wall construction, pesky black flies and the occasional severe thunderstorm.  Our incredible staff of Eric Wilcox, Dylan Laidlaw and Dillon Williams worked extremely hard and preformed brilliantly to get the project done on time.  Myself, Jackie Grow and my father John Mann also worked very hard to finish this large project.

Embedded below is a video taken just before we broke ground that explains the project and where everything is to be located.  More videos will be posted to our you tube channel in the coming days for you to see it come to life.  You can also click the link to our Poseidon Ponds & Landscaping google + page where you can browse all of the project photos.  We had a great time building this project and look forward to coming back and completing some of the future additions to the site.  It was a pleasure working with the Fox family and we thank them for this immense opportunity.

Extra Details:

Dry Stack Walls-

The dry stack walls are sitting atop a 12" compacted limestone base complete with perforated drain tile along the back side to remove any storm water from sitting near the wall.  The rocks are a Michigan 6-12" fieldstone that is loosely dry stacked with no mortar.  Inside the wall there is cobble and crushed natural stone to provide support and drainage.

Crushed Stone Pathways-

The crushed fine natural pathways are 6" deep atop an underlayment fabric to prevent sinking and combining with the existing clay soil.  They are outlined with landscape timbers that are held in the ground by steel re-rod and notched for a better hold.
